What on earth have I been doing?

Self Portrait 2020/21 Oil on Canvas 48” x 53”. This is the biggest I have ever worked and I look forward to doing more!

It starts with an idea, and a quick sketch

I try to plan a little, and have fun and play and this stage

Well, its been a while and I wanted to post what I have been up to. Over COVID I took some workshops online, with people I probably never could have studied with. It was wonderful on that level, and it pushed me to think about what I wanted form this life of creating. SO I am simply going to post the images of what I have been doing. One piece was entered in a show at The Maryhill Museum in Washington and I recently found out that I received BEST IN SHOW! This piece was an experimental piece for me, and though I only achieved some of what I set out to do, I did achieve a complex composition that I truly had fun working on. I kept myself to a limited palette as I felt when I expanded my palette I was not getting the clarity in color I wanted ( or you could say I didn’t have my palette under control?!?!, Ill get there!) The Journey continues , and thank you for visiting!

Poster or Color Studies

Studies for my bigger painting, these are fairly quick oil sketches, a few hours on each, this helps me decide on the overall size, composition and color

My set up, I was looking into the mirror next to my easel that allowed me to look into a beveled victorian mirrored panel, it definitely was a good brain exercise! This also shows the work when it was in progress.

and below some of the final details, I was trying to really use the paint and be confidant in my brush strokes and thought. In some cases I felt in important to leave the mistakes, because I feel like if anything I have learned over my continued education and our past crazy year is that, I am a work in progress, and I hope to keep learning, and mistakes are opportunities. They too can be a gift.

My Self Portrait is on view at Maryhill Museum in Goldendale, WA. You can view the exhibit online https://www.maryhillmuseum.org/searching-for-beauty for the rest of the year. It was a thrill to see it, and an honor to receive Best in Show. Thank you.
